The Pioneer Settlement lets you experience the history of life on the Murray first hand. This unique experience was the first of its kind in Victoria and has been emulated time and time again; proving Australian history will live on.

Take a step back in time, along the banks of the Murray River, with an immersive self-guided tour of the pioneer settlement. See the past come alive amongst working displays, restorations and exhibits. Have our resident Clydesdale horses, Gemma and Joe, take you on a relaxing ride through Main Street upon their replica Cobb & Co. carriage or take a back seat in the restored 1920’s Dodge. See the world through the eyes of a pioneer by visiting the only Kaiser Stereoscopic Theatre available seven days a week.

Watch the Pioneers in action as our blacksmiths operates daily, producing quality pieces available for purchase at his shed in the Machinery end of town, or visit the fully functioning Echo Print Shop and have your name printed on a 19th century wanted poster. Shopping more your style? Take a stroll into the parlour and music shop to see the style of the day. Talk to one of our friendly volunteers to try on some outfits and capture the memory with as many photographs as you wish.

Take a break in the new Paragon Cafe, offering wonderful views of Main Street, a delicious home-style menu and discover the past of this old hall through the memories shared by our lovely volunteers. Dumosa Towaninnie Hall was relocated and redeveloped into the well-known Paragon Cafe in 2015. All profits are used to locally support the Settlements ongoing development.

Your Pioneer Settlement tour is not complete without a cruise down the mighty Murray River aboard the PS Pyap. Built in Mannum South Australia in 1896, the PS Pyap was destined as a floating general store. Despite her size the Pyap can float in less than a metre of water—great news for the regional townships along the Murray River. In her day the Pyap travelled 500 kilometres each week selling goods to over 60 settlements and landing places along the river. Needles to say the township of Swan Hill would not be where they are today if it were not for the paddle steamers and its crew to deliver goods and services. The Pyap cruises daily Monday to Friday and twice daily on weekends.

Join us as the sun goes down with the award-wining Laser Light Spectacular set on the banks of the mighty Murray River. ‘Heartbeat of the Murray’ is the first of its kind in the world to use a natural river environment and setting as its background to produce a 360-degree multi-media spectacular unlike anything ever seen in Australia. The use of water, light, laser, sound and special effects transports you back in time 30 million years to tell you the story of the Murray. As we move forward in time the formation of the land, its people and their stories come to life in this state-of-the-art show. This show is one not to be missed.
