Accessibility
We are dedicated to making our historic village as accessible and welcoming as possible for all visitors.
As a recreation of a 19th-century Mallee township, some areas may present accessibility challenges. We strive to ensure everyone can enjoy the rich history of the Murray River region.
Navigating the site
The Pioneer Settlement is an open-air museum designed to reflect the character of a 1800s Mallee township, which can impact accessibility:
- Pathways
Our outdoor paths are primarily gravel, dirt, and compacted earth, reflecting the historical setting. These surfaces can be rough and uneven. This may make it hard for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or anyone with mobility issues to get around. Some areas feature paved or boardwalk sections for easier access. We recommend contacting us in advance to discuss the most suitable routes for your needs.
- Buildings
Many historic buildings are small. They often have narrow doorways, steps, or limited space inside. This can make it hard for wheelchairs or mobility aids to get through.
- Rest areas
Benches and seating areas are spread across the site for visitors to rest during their visit.
- Sensory considerations
The Pioneer Settlement is an outdoor venue filled with natural sounds. You might hear horses, water, and old machinery. This can be overwhelming for some visitors. Quiet areas are available, and we can recommend less crowded times to visit.
- Assistance
Our friendly staff are happy to assist visitors with accessibility needs.
Wheelchair hire
Wheelchairs are available free of charge, subject to availability, and must be operated by a carer or companion. To reserve a wheelchair or check availability, please call us at 1800 981 911 before your visit.
Accessible toilets
Wheelchair accessible toilets are conveniently located on site at the following locations:
- Main Entrance
- Paragon Café
- Lower Murray Inn
- Adjacent to the Gaol
These facilities are equipped with grab rails and ample space for wheelchairs to ensure comfort and accessibility.
Service animals
Guide dogs, service dogs, and other registered assistance animals are warmly welcomed at the Pioneer Settlement. These animals are welcome throughout the site, including all accessible areas, provided they are clearly identifiable, such as wearing a harness or vest and accompanied by documentation.
For details about why only working animals are permitted on site see our No Pet Policy page.
PS Pyap River Cruise
The PS Pyap, our historic paddle steamer, is a highlight of the Pioneer Settlement experience. Boarding is via a ramp, which can become quite steep depending on the Murray River’s water levels, making it difficult for some visitors, particularly those with mobility challenges or using wheelchairs.
Our staff will provide updates on river conditions and accessibility upon your arrival or contact us in advance to discuss your needs.
Heartbeat of the Murray / Legends of the Mallee
Our evening shows, Heartbeat of the Murray and Legends of the Mallee, take place at the Riverside Theatre, located a short 400 metre walk from our front entrance along a sealed road surface, suitable for wheelchairs and mobility aids.
The shows include strobe lighting, which may trigger seizures in some individuals with epilepsy. If you have photosensitive epilepsy or other sensory sensitivities, please contact us to discuss accommodations.
Parking
Designated accessible parking bays are available near the main entrance for visitors with valid Australian or international disability parking permits.
